Is your sub-woofer where it should be?

In most Home Theatre setup's the sub-woofer is shoved in a corner or where it cause's the least aesthetic problems; Interestingly, in most Home Theatre setups, the sub-woofer is not where it should be! If the sub-woofer is in the correct place you should hear no obvious bass, it should just seamlessly blend in with the surrounding audio but should still be able to pack a punch when needed in those big explosions. It should be smooth and even.

You could spend a bit of money buying an audio reader which you wave around like a wand finding peaks and nulls and and keep moving the sub until the sound level is perfect in your seat. You could spend even more money paying someone else to wave the magic wand and tell you where to put it. If you're anything like me though, you hate spending more money than needed and so there is one final option for you. You can do the "sub-woofer crawl"!

What the hell is the "sub-woofer crawl" I hear you ask? Ahhhh..., it's what those magic wand wavers don't want you to know about. Basically, you place the sub-woofer in the spot where your seat is (some lifting required) and while playing back a movie or audio track, you crawl around the room like a goose with your head at your seated listening level and find the place where the bass sounds smooth and even. This sweet spot will not be the loudest bass but the cleanest. There may be a few sweet spots in the one room. Once the place is found, you place the sub-woofer in that spot and return your chair to its position. Sit down, and enjoy the perfect sound.

In each room the best spot for the sub-woofer may not be the nicest looking place so I found it handy to find the places in my room where I could live with the look of it. I then listened specifically in these spots and chose from these. It was amazing where my sweet spots were!
The beauty of this system is that it doesn't cost anything, it will fix any shape room even those with open walls and larger windows, and it will most importantly make your current setup sound its best. You may draw a few questioning looks or even open mocking but that is something I am willing to take if I can improve my system without spending a dollar or even leaving the house!

3D HDMI Cables with ETHERNET and AUDIO RETURN!

The new leads include the two new channels; the Ethernet channel and the Return Audio channel.
The Ethernet channel allows you to share an internet connection between two units. Hi all,

For the last 2 years I have had great pleasure in getting to know you all on the phone, in the shop and in person and it is with much trepidation that I move into my new role with Selby Acoustics.

From the 1 of March 2010 I will be taking on the role of Training and Development Manager at Selby Acoustics taking me into a completely new role and a new challenge for the future.

Rest assured though I am leaving you in good hands.

As usual you will still have Abby on the phones and email’s but we have 2 new team members joining us.

Firstly I would like to introduce you to Mimo. Mimo comes to us with 10 years home theatre and Hi-Fi experience and has a background that includes many years of speaker building and design.

How to #2– Installing outdoor speakers...

To successfully install a set of outdoor speakers there are a couple of key things you need to know to make things go smoothly.

First, work out the best position for your speakers. Contrary to popular belief there is no real 'best' position. The best position is where they look the best aesthetically in your outdoor area.

Use the following chart to figure our which cable is right for you:

Next, work out the approximate distance from the amplification source to the desired speaker location. This is important in working out which gauge of speaker cable to purchase. Too small and you will be driving your amplifier too hard and too big and you will be spending money unnecessarily

Although somewhat important, from a sound perspective, there are generally no walls for the sound to reflect off like there are in a theatre room. It is better to think about where they will look best in your area rather than worry about sound and reflections. Where they are positioned will also be determined by things like brickwork / siding and your ability to pass cables through these barriers.

Once the desired location has been selected the next step is to work out how you are going to mount the speakers. The most common method of mounting these speakers is in a horizontal method as pictured below. You can of course mount them vertically as well depending on the location without any effect on the speakers.

After you have mounted the bracket the next step is to get the cable through the wall and to the speaker. The ends of the cable should be terminated directly into the speaker without any further connections. As the cable is outdoors it will corrode over time.

One way to avoid this is to 'tin' the ends of the cable when you strip the outer coating off exposing the copper inside. This is simply a coating of solder applied with a soldering iron and some solder. This will give you a connection that will last longer in an outdoor environment and provide a higher quality of join.

Once the ends of the cable are coated the next step is to insert the cables into the holes. It is important at this stage to make sure that the negative and positive are connected correctly from the amplifier.

The cable usually has one side that is marked with either some form of writing or a stripe. The easiest way to remember which side is which is to make the stripe side the negative (or black side) and the non marked side the positive (or red side).

After the cables are inserted the next step is to turn on the amplification source and test the speakers to make sure they are working correctly.

Resist the temptation to turn them up loud at this stage as you will most likely damage the speakers.

Speakers need to be 'run in' at low operating levels for a while before turning them up too loud. By running the speakers at a moderate level for a few hours after they are installed you will help prolong the life of them.

What Does an HDMI Cable do and Does it Matter What You Pay

In order to make the correct purchase of an HMDI cable you must first understand what a HDMI cable does. HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface and in simple terms it provides you with high definition digital video and high definition digital audio in one simple cable.

It is the first and only industry-supported, uncompressed, all digital audio/video interface.

There is a reasonably well known debate about HDMI cables and whether or not more expensive cables produce a better signal than the cheaper cables. How to #1 - Choosing the correct bracket for your TV

How to choose the right bracket for your LCD or PLASMA.

Welcome to our first comprehensive HOW TO on choosing the correct bracket for your TV or monitor.

We will attempt to show you the steps to selecting the correct bracket for your TV.

Having made the decision to hang your TV or monitor on the wall what is the first step to selecting the right bracket?

Measuring the mounting holes:

The easiest method is to simply measure the distance between the holes both vertically and horizontally on the back of the TV.

Take your tape measure and firstly measure the distance between the holes from top to bottom using roughly the centre of the hole. Repeat this process for the holes from left to right also.

Once you have these measurements (in our case they are 320mm high x 630mm wide) you can start to figure out which bracket you need.

Another method to determine the mounting hole dimensions is to have a look in the user manual for the TV. This information is not always available on the booklet.

Working out which one is right for you:

There are lots to things to consider when choosing a mount for your new TV.

What height should it be mounted at? Will I need the bracket to tilt? Should I make it swing away from the wall? Is it a permanent mount?

All of these questions will affect your choice of bracket and the amount of money you will need to spend.

Think about the use for the TV now and in the future. If it is in a kitchen it may be a good idea to get a swivel style so you can watch it whilst cooking and also from the dining room table. In the family room you may wish to mount the screen a bit higher than usual (to make it look more like a picture frame) and need to tilt the screen down a bit to achieve a better viewing angle.

It is also important to measure the outer dimensions of the bracket. For example if your TV is 800mm wide and the brackets is 880mm wide this would be unsuitable as you would see the bracket sticking out from beside the TV.

Tilting, swivelling, flat ... What does it all mean?

TILT – The ability to tilt a bracket does 2 things. It allows you to tilt the screen up and down to achieve a better angle from which to view the TV and also makes life really easy when plugging in new cables etc. TV's are mounted around 60-70mm from the wall.

SWIVEL – This gives you TV the ability to move left and right. The further the bracket comes away from the wall the more degrees of swivel are obtained. TV's are mounted the furthest from the wall around 100mm.

FIXED – This is generally a 2 piece bracket that is mounted in a fixed position from the wall. When choosing one of this style brackets you need to be aware of the minimum distances from the wall recommended by the manufacturer. TV's mounted in this way can be as little as 15mm from the wall.

Choosing the correct bracket for your TV:

The next step is to sort out from all the varied descriptions which ones will fit your TV.

There are a few standards that make life easy for you. VESA is the most common and comes in sizes like 100x100, 200 x 100 and 200x200. These are squares, or rectangles, of standard sizes that most smaller to medium sized LCD's use. If your TV has mounting holes that are 100x100 (ie 100mm square) you are in the best category for choice as there are many different styles to choose from.

As your TV gets bigger, so do the mounting hole spacings.

The range of brackets for larger TV's is not as broad but then neither are the applications that most people want to use them in. If the mounting holes for your TV are less than the sizes on our listings they will generally fit. ie our TV is 320mm x 630mm so a bracket that fits up to 580mm x 780mm will fit just fine!

The box says 15” to 30” and my TV is 32” is this OK?

Generally speaking ... it should be fine. The important things when selecting your bracket is the size of the mounting holes and the weight capacity.

The weight capacity:

Your TV's manufacturer has a weight rating for their panel. This is usually found in the back of the user manual or the back of the box in which the TV is contained. Every TV is different and there is no such thing as a standard weight.

When choosing a bracket from us, each one has its own rating for the recommended maximum weight. We generally recommend going for a bracket with a higher weight rating as this will ensure a sturdier fitment to the wall and a more secure mount on the TV

Choosing the right colour for your room:

Colour is an important part in most rooms and the correct colour bracket is important too. Realistically, with the bracket behind the TV you will not likely see it, however we do suggest that when you have a choice try to get a bracket that matches the colour of the back of your tv.

With the plastic insert removed the iphone can now be plugged in:

Place the iPhone in the unit using the foam backing to push the unit forward:

You retain all the functionality and it now swims :)...

Once the room was tidied I 'had ' to get the screen up and the projector on to see how it looked!!

With the curtains now up and the room vacuumed (by me ;) ) i took some empty room shots.

With the ceiling in, the lights done and the room clear it was time to get the curtains up.

Before the curtains we fixed the sound panels in place and painted in the shadow lines to the top and bottom.

An the installation of the curtains began!

The front wall and approximately 1 metre back up each side was done in a dark charcoal colour

And th erest of the wall were done in this dark brown colour

The contrast is nowhere near this stark but it gives you an idea where the charcoal starts and finishes.

And this is the room with all the curtains up and the lights on ... starting to look a little sexy now ;)

With the room all cabled and clean it was time to put the ceiling panels back in.

With no help from the bloke here on the left (yeah you Dean!!!) we put all the tiles back in a drilled the holes for the downlights to go in.

The next step was to have the carpet laid.

The guys from Glendale Carpets came through for us again with some of the good stuff at a more than reasonable price.

Tony is the owner down there and is more than helpful... :)

Our only complaint was that the guys who laid the carpet didn't do a very good job of cleaning up after themselves... The actual lay and join etc was great though as was the service leading up to the purchase :)

With the carpet complete we just had to put our sound panels in place and await the arrival of the curtains...

The excitment is building :)

Demo Room - Part 3...

The next step was to get the room tidied up and get the electricians in.

We had a couple of data and power points added to the room to ensure we had plenty of points in case we changed the room design around at any stage.

Power was added to the side and rear of the room and data to the front, back and side.

We also elected to have the data cabinet moved up into the ceiling. Originally we had decided to build a false wall in front of the cabinet but this turned out to be a much better option.

We also decided to install and dimmable infra red light switch for extra effect later on.

The next part was to paint all the cleaned parts on the ceiling black.

And stick back in one of the panels to see what it will look like when it is all done :)

The next step was to remove the floating ceiling panels and clean the rails in preparation for painting.

All the white rails in this pic will end up black

After removing the panels from the ceiling we laid them all out on the floor and painted them all black...

Kirily ... She's what?

It is another sad day here at Selby Acoustics...

After 2 years and thousands of happy customers Kirily is moving back home :(

Better known to most people as 'Kirky' (coz no one was able to spell or remember her real name!) Kirily is moving away from the finest city on Earth back to Newcastle.(I hadn't even heard of the place until Kirily said it a few times, must be a small town ;) )

Kirily has been an integral part of the growth of Selby Acoustics coming to us from JB Hifi with attitude oozing from every pore.

This is not a girl to lock horns with ... :)

She's a little over 6 foot with spiky hair and tattoos. Kirily's knowledge of all things hifi rivals that of just about anyone I have ever met and she was never afraid to correct me whenever I was wrong (me... wrong .... never!)

We will certainly miss Kirily and her crazy (and somewhat scary at times) antics...

(underwear in the street, putting out grass fires wearing a viking hat anyone...)

But the thing we will miss the most is her IPOD ... :)

Good luck in the future from all of us here and we will see you again real soon.........

Demo Room - Part 1...

We came up with a brilliant idea!

Lets make our 'kinda sound / storage room into a theatre room.

EASY ...

This is what we started with:
Looking to front of theatre room

Looking to back of theatre room

We had all our 'stuff' stored in here in the wooden shelving as well as all the spare racking etc that had to find a new home

So the first step was to remove most of the 'stuff' and remove the fixed shelving making the room one big area.

After clearing the room out and getting some dimensions we started to decide on how the romm was to be laid out, the size of the screen and the items that we were going to sell from this room...

Its a bit of a sad day today!!

Josh, who has been with us for around 18 months, finishes up today and starts his new career on Monday with a Web Design company.

Josh has been an extremely important part of the growth of Selby Acoustics and we wish him all the best in his new role and every success in the future.

I think a BBQ lunch may be in order :)
